What Jane Saw

Purpose

The goal of the What Jane Saw project was to recreate the art exhibit for Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) that took place at the British Institution in Pall Mall, London on May 24, 1813. TACC researchers worked closely with Janine Barchas, English Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, to accurately depict the building geometry as well as precise location of each portrait inside a three-dimensional model.

Technology

The Vislab staff used Unity3D, a cross-platform game creation engine, to enhance the existing Sketchup model generated by Professor Barchas' team. Unity3D also allowed TACC researchers to integrate the model with the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality head-mounted display. The result was a fully-immersive, virtual reality experience that allows users to move freely through the model and identify key relationships between portrait subjects more naturally.
