University of Texas Research Cyberinfrastructure 

Overview 

TACC provides high performance computing, visualization, data analysis, storage, software, and cloud, gateways & portal interfaces. Every day, TACC's staff work with hundreds of researchers, enabling them to discover new drugs, develop renewable energy sources, and visualize the explosion of a star, among many other important discoveries. Not just for scientists and engineers, TACC's resources can be used by technologists, industry partners, educators, humanities scholars, and others.

The University of Texas Research Cyberinfrastructure (UTRC) initiative provides advanced computing capabilities to researchers across all 14 UT System institutions. By providing a combination of advanced computational systems, large data storage resources, high bandwidth data access between the institutions, and computational expertise, UTRC enables researchers to collaborate across campuses and compete at the forefront of science and discovery.

Getting Started with UTRC and TACC

Create an Account  

Initial Account Creation

Create a TACC account using your UT System Institution Credentials.

Navigate to the sign up page and select your institution: portal.tacc.utexas.edu/utdr

Login with your institution credentials.

Click 'I need to create a TACC Account' button. Complete form – if eligible, check the 'I am PI Eligible' box.

Check email to verify account and set personal password.

Set Up Two-Factor Authentication

Due to increased security and compliance requirements, we now require multi-factor authentication for all users directly accessing many resources provided by TACC. This can be done after the initial account creation, or any time after verifying your account. Pair a device in one of the following ways

 

Create a Project  

Do You Have Sensitive Data?

TACC can accommodate sensitive data (including Protected Health Information) from certain institutions on certain resources. Please contact us to find out if you are covered.

 

Principal investigators must prepare a short title and abstract describing the research project (250 words). If this is a new project, choose type "Startup" in the drop down menu. Startup projects are reviewed quickly, and will turn into full research projects upon renewal. Educational and training projects are also available. Compute

TACC specializes in high performance computing, enabling researchers to make discoveries in every field of science. Stampede 2 is one of the most powerful and significant current supercomputers in the U.S. for open science research. The system offers infinite opportunities for computational science and technology.

Lonestar 5 is specifically designed for academic researchers in the UT System. It serves as the primary high performance computing resource in UTRC.

Storage & Data Services

TACC offer 2 systems focused on storage and data service. Corral leads the way in the preservation and sharing of data for researchers. Deployed in 2009, Corral supports data-centric science at The University of Texas at Austin, and throughout the U.S.

Ranch, a long-term mass storage solution, has 2 petabytes of online storage for data transfer and capacity for 160 petabytes of offline tape storage. By providing a massive file system for archival purposes, this system serves the HPC and Visualization communities.

GPU-Based Visualization

Maverick is a dedicated visualization and data analysis resource. It combines capabilities for interactive advanced visualization and large-scale data analytics as well as traditional high performance computing. Recent exponential increases in the size and quantity of digital datasets necessitate fast data movement and advanced statistical analysis.

Cloud Computing

Jetstream is the first user-friendly, scalable cloud environment for XSEDE. The system enables researchers working at the "long tail of science" and the creation of truly customized virtual machines and computing architectures.

Chameleon is a configurable experimental environment for large-scale cloud research. This platform allows the open research community to explore transformative concepts in deeply programmable cloud services, design, and core technologies.

Database/Hadoop Resources

Wrangler is the most powerful data analysis system allocated in XSEDE. The system is designed for large scale data transfer, analytics, and sharing and provides flexible support for a wide range of software stacks and workflows.

 

Request an Allocation  

Request an allocation for TACC resources by navigating to your Project, and clicking the "Request new allocation" button. Choose as many resources as are required, and provide a short justification on how the compute hours and / or storage space will be used.
