Frontera Supercomputer Expands to Support Urgent Computing

The Frontera supercomputer has expanded thanks to a supplemental award from the National Science Foundation and a substantial contribution from Dell and Intel. The expansion will support urgent computing, including accelerating pandemic research and supporting rapid responses to natural and man-made disasters.

How UK, South Africa Coronavirus Variants Escape Immunity

Computational scientist Victor Padilla-Sanchez used molecular dynamics simulations on TACC's Frontera supercomputer to investigate the UK and South African COVID-19 variants and how they bind to human cells. Padilla-Sanchez discovered that the South African variant has more important changes in the spike protein, making it more dangerous than the UK variant.

Tracking Cosmic Ghosts

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory observes and detects the cosmos from deep within the South Pole ice. In March 2021, the IceCube collaboration announced the discovery of a high-energy anti-neutrino. The finding, published in Nature, provides further validation of the Standard Model of particle physics. TACC's Frontera supercomputer was among the resources used to detect and confirm the discovery.

First Complete Coronavirus Model Shows Cooperation

A multiscale, coarse-grained model of the complete SARS-CoV-2 virion has been developed for the first time using supercomputers. This new model of the spike protein shows how the virus explores and detects the ACE2 receptors of a host cell. The model provides a platform for the design of safer, better medicines to treat and prevent COVID-19.

Supercomputing the Secrets of the Inner Ear

Marcos Sotomayor, a researcher in chemistry and biochemistry at Ohio State University, and his colleagues are studying two large proteins involved in hearing loss and balance disorders used supercomputers at TACC and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center to simulate the lower end of the tip-link proteins. Their work includes research into the cochlear and vestibular channels to initiate signal transduction.

Quantum chromodynamics, or QCD, is the theory of the strong interaction between subatomic particles known as quarks and gluons. Carleton DeTar and Steven Gottlieb, two of the leading contemporary scholars of lattice QCD research, are using Frontera to explore "tantalizing hints" of new physics in the discrepancies between experimental and theoretical results.
