Story Highlights

Computer simulations helped scientists understand how the plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) binds to an enzyme, improving it through bioengineering.

XSEDE allocations on TACC Stampede, Stampede2 and SDSC Comet supercomputer captured through molecular dynamics simulations how the enzyme (PETase) interacts with PET.

PETase research could help lead to scaling up recycling of PET found in water bottles, carpets, and more.
