Scientists have used powerful supercomputers to uncover part of the mechanism that activates cell mutations found in about 50 percent of melanomas.

An October 2019 study in the journal Science determined the structure of the protein complex B-Raf that's linked to melanoma, and it also found how the paradoxical B-Raf activation happens.

XSEDE allocations on Stampede2 of TACC and Bridges at Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center modeled the B-Raf protein and other proteins in the pathway linked to skin cancer.

The study can help lead to a better understanding of skin cancer and to the design of better drugs.
