Story Highlights

2.5 million individuals experience traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs, every year, of which approximately 50,000 result in death, and over 80,000 suffer permanent disability.

Clinical trials at UTHealth are exploring whether stem cell therapies can prevent the deterioration of brain matter near the original injury.

The project uses a variety of brain imaging technologies to assess changes to the brain post-injury with and without treatment.

The imaging produces large quantities of data which require TACC supercomputers for analysis.
