Story Highlights

Millions of citizen scientists contribute to scientific and engineering research, as well as environmental monitoring, each year.

Increasingly, these efforts help train machine learning or deep learning models that aid in scientific discovery — often in conjunction high performance computing.

Human trained models can include biases. However, these biases can themselves be studied and can lead to insights about human cognition and better ways to pair human and computer expertise.
