Zero Velocity Surfaces Dr. Cesar Ocampo, UT Austin. Visualization by Jose A. Carreno and Greg P. Johnson, TACC. This program lets us see and understand the effect of celestial bodies on the trajectory of a spacecraft orbiting the earth. The zero velocity surface, shown in blue, is the limit to which the spacecraft can approach without losing all its energy. The image shows the spacecraft orbiting the moon before escaping the vicinity of the Earth-Moon system. |
