Sample Block of Human Heart Muscle Mitochondria
Data Provided by: Dr. Christopher Gilpin, UT Southwestern Medical Center Visualization By: Christopher Burns, TACC
The sample is a chemically fixed block of cardiac muscle embedded in epoxy resin. A series of 2D slice images were obtained using an FEI company HELIOS nanolab dual-beam electron microscope. The data has a resolution of 6nm per pixel in x and y and 30 nm in Z. The data set is a 4 micrometer by 4 micrometer by 6 micrometer volume of cardiac muscle. The data was accurately aligned using IMOD software (University of Colorado, Boulder) before being imported into Paraview running remotely on Maverick. Mitochondria were selected based on image intensity using a thresholding operation and color-coded to highlight their location in the remaining monochrome data set.
