Professor van de Geijn's research is centered on the development of a Formal Linear Algebra Methods Environment (FLAME) with which ab initio correct algorithms and high-performance implementations for dense linear algebra operations may be derived. Libraries that result allow calculations to be launched on any target architecture. Such an environment might ultimately supplant the many constantly revised libraries and auxiliary services that are now employed in so many disciplines in such profusion. As a demonstration of the potential of the methodology, van de Geijn and his students and collaborators have developed the FLAME library for sequential and the Parallel Linear Algebra Package (PLAPACK) library for distributed memory architectures.
