Analysis of Formation of the Odessa Meteor Crater

Dr. David L. Littlefield
Professor of Mechanical Engineering
The University of Alabama, Birmingham
(formerly at the Institute for Computational and Engineering Sciences, The University of Texas at Austin)

Professor Littlefield and graduate student Paul T. Bauman, while Liittlefield was still a UT faculty member, used the CTH code for high-velocity impact analysis of the formation of the Odessa, Texas, meteor crater, which is the second-largest impact crater in the United States.
The calculations were performed on the Longhorn (IBM Power 4) machine at TACC, and the results are reported in this feature story.
