The damage in Long Beach, Mississippi near Gulfport, as seen on September 6, 2005, caused by the estimated 25 to 28 foot storm surge produced by Hurricane Katrina.
This image shows the storm surge damage, looking north from the beach, which is just out of view at the bottom of the photo. Notice the debris line near the top of the photo, which represents the farthest point inland inundated by the storm surge. The debris piles were 10-15 feet high in some places along the leading edge of the water. Most other buildings were completely destroyed. Image courtesy of FEMA.
