Purpose of the Position
The Portal and Gateway Developer will help design, develop, deploy, and support portals and gateways that enable researchers to utilize distributed advanced computing resources.
Essential functions
Develop new applications and capabilities for the current TACC web-based portal projects, such as the TACC and TeraGrid User Portals. Collaborate with the researchers at UT and in the national academic research community to gather and analyze requirements and support users for portals and application-focused science gateways. Utilize software development tools and techniques including source control management, prototyping, unit testing, documentation, bug tracking, and peer code review. Perform maintenance on software running in a critical production environment. Assist in the publication of results from development and research activities through presentations at conferences and workshops, as well as through publications in conference proceedings and professional journals. Participate in teleconferences for national projects involving project staff across the country.

Required qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, mathematics, or a computational science or engineering discipline. Two years of relevant experience. Demonstrated expertise in object oriented software design and development. Proficiency with common web application programming languages, tools, and protocols such as HTTP, Java, JSP, Servlets, XML, CSS, Javascript, HTML, Apache web server, Tomcat web server, Ant / Maven, AJAX and web services. Must be comfortable working on Unix-based servers. Must possess good communication and organizational skills with demonstrated success working in a team environment; pleasant, flexible, and efficient communicator by phone, email and in person. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred qualifications
Master's degree in computer science, information science, mathematics, or a computational science or engineering discipline. Four years of relevant experience. Demonstrated expertise in using and developing web applications. Experience with Java portlets (JSR168) and/or Java portal frameworks (LifeRay, GridSphere, WebSphere, uPortal, etc). Experience with scripting languages such as PHP, shell, Perl, Ruby, Python, etc.
Working conditions May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Use of manual dexterity. Lifting and moving. Security sensitive; conviction verification conducted on applicant selected.

The Science & Technology Communications Intern will assist the External Relations group with the production of articles, press releases, staff profiles and newsletters that promote TACC’s overall leadership in advanced computing. TACC is looking for someone with a positive and proactive attitude, strong communication and organizational skills, dependability, the ability to work independently and in a group, and writing skills.
This position will report to the External Relations Manager, and work closely with the Public Relations Coordinator and the Science & Technology Writer, and support other research projects and activities as needed.
This internship is non-paid. The student will receive credit as indicated in the College of Communication “Internship for Credit” program / Public Relations Sequence. We will ensure a hands-on learning experience and the student will leave the internship with writing samples.
Summer Internship: Students can work 20-40 hours per week. Fall Internship: Students can only work 12-15 hours per week. (It is possible for the Summer Intern to stay on for the Fall).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Assist in writing, editing, and updating information including feature articles, press releases, research abstracts, newsletters, and staff profiles. Gather and organize information related to future projects.
- Conduct online and in-person research related to Education and Outreach, including analysis of the high-performance computing landscape, TACC’s user base, and activities of other academic advanced computing centers.
- Extend the scope of user research content on the website with visualizations, photographs and publication links.
- Attend and contribute to group meetings.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- One (1) year+ of experience writing articles/press releases.
- Ability to conduct research and interviews on scientific concepts.
- Capable of managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines, organizing work, setting priorities and determining strategies to achieve them.
- Office productivity tools – Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Internet and email use.
PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Two (2) years+ of experience writing copy and developing multimedia products for the web.
- Web/Graphics/Design tools expertise – Adobe Acrobat/Photoshop/Illustrator.
- Collaboration tools experience – wikis and other multiple-input environments.
- Other computing skills/experience: Windows Vista, Mac OS, Unix/Linux.
